How to Make a New Layer
Easy PhotoShop Tutorials

This Tool Pallet is called LAYERS. Behind it is several other tools, but we're not going to use them right now.

Okay, here's what we're going to do. Put your mouse on the dark blue panel called BACKGROUND, and drag it down below to where Arrow 2 is pointing.
The little square where Arrow 2 is pointing is called a NEW LAYER, so we are actually creating a NEW LAYER.

Create a New Layer in Photoshop

Now we have 2 panels. Notice which panel is dark blue now. The NEW LAYERyou created is called BACKGROUND COPY and is dark blue, instead of our original layer. See where Arrow 1 is pointing at the Background? That was dark blue in the first picture, and now it's not, so what happened?

To review, The NEW LAYER that was created, is called BACKGROUND COPY, so it was automatically selected when you made it. But we are going to change that right now. So click on BACKGROUND again to select it, and we'll continue on the next page called Using the Canvas Tool
