Pumpkin Patch Field Picture
White Hills Connecticut

Here's a nice Fall picture of a pumpkin patch field. A local farmer here in Connecticut specializes in growing pumpkins.

This is not their only pumpkin field either. They have three pumpkin patches.

What's at the end of this road? Another pumpkin patch, of course.

The farmer hires local students to come and fetch the pumpkins from the fields, and bring them up to the Pumpkin Party they have every year.

About Harvesting Pumpkins - Pumpkins are ready for harvest when they are completely orange. They can be left on the vine beyond that time as long as the weather doesn't get too cold, if they are subject to a freeze they will rot and turn black, so if the weather is going to freeze cover them with a tarp. To keep bugs from eating the undersides, set the pumpkin on a roof shingle. This is a good quick drying base for the pumpkin too. Use shears to cut the stem to harvest the pumpkin.

Fact: A pumpkin without a stem rots faster than a pumpkin with a stem. For the same reason, try not to scratch the pumpkin's skin. Store pumpkins in a dry spot from 50 to 55 degrees, like a garage or attic. Some gardeners scratch their initials in the pumpkin while it is still green and not quite ripe. The scratches heal quickly and leave permanent markings on the pumpkin skin.
